The most adjacent distance between Korea and China is about 200 km (124 miles) from the coastline; the distance from the lowest edge of the southeast coast of Korea to the coast of Japan is also 200 km (124 miles) away. The length of the Korean peninsula is approximately 1,030 (612 miles) and the width at its narrowest point approximately 175km (109 miles). Korea has a total area of about 99,200 km2 (38,301 square miles) and a population of approximately 48 million (as of 2005).

Due to these geographical features, the Korean peninsula connects other countries in Asia; therefore the nation considered very important.

Geographical features

Over 70% of the territory is covered with large and small mountains. Korea is a climbing country with conditions given by nature that are difficult to find elsewhere in the world. Climbing can be enjoyed close to everyday life. It is not like an climbing expedition to the Himalaya, but it offers various climbing experiences.

When walking into the east direction, you will see beautiful mountains and picturesque valleys of magnificent granite and sedimentary rocks. The inclination of the mountain is high and seem to fall abruptly the closer you get to the coastline comparable with a topographical map. When walking south the altitude is lowered and land is evened out for the purpose of farming.
