Ice climbing is just like rock climbing with more difficult conditions. It signifies an ascension process on ice walls or pillars that had become stiff after perpetual snow defrosted or frozen walls.
In Korea, number of climbers has rapidly increased since 1980s. Ice climbing is a very popular form of climbing during winter. Artificial ice walls were established in addition to natural ice walls and ice climbing techniques and skills were improved.
Ice climbing requires 'special' equipment for ice walls and signifies the act of ascending ice walls. The climbing itself is pretty much the same as rock climbing, but locations, climbing wall and equipment, etc are totally different. A higher level of technique is required for this kind of climbing.
Furthermore, contrary to continuous and safe climbing on rock walls, ice does not remain the same, but changes all the time depending on the weather, time of the day or climber that ascended the wall before you, etc. As ice climbing feels different and new every time, it offers various experiences.
In addition, the climber uses ice tools to carve ice for the climb. The path that the climber chooses is a new path; the climber stops and installs protection. The protected side becomes the new belay point. This process requires higher techniques and experience and the feeling of mental safety.
